NEW YORK — There is a direct connection between oral health and overall health. Oral conditions can mirror your bodys health, according to Dr. Terry Gotthelf, who warns that preventable oral diseases such as gum disease may affect other conditions, including heart and respiratory diseases, diabetes, osteoporosis and stroke. Also, benchmarks of the female life cycle can be identified through benchmarks in the mouth. Dr. Gotthelf will conduct a seminar, The Mind-Body Connection, A Gateway to Womens Health, this Sunday, April 3rd, as part of the 92nd Street Ys Annual Womens Health Symposium that starts at 9:15 a.m. at the Y at Lexington Avenue and East 92nd Street. Call 212-415-5500 to register for the Symposium. Dr. Gotthelf warns that periodontal disease, a bacterial infection of the tissues which support the teeth, and affects three out of four people over 35 years old, is associated with:
OKEMOS, Mich. — Think your medical history isnt important to your dentist? Think again. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, patients should mention everything about their health, even if it they think it doesnt relate to the mouth. Forgetting to share information about medications and health conditions can result in serious health consequences, said Dr. Jed Jacobson, vice president of Professional Services and dental director at the affiliated Delta Dental Plans of Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. It is important to consider the dentist a key member of your personal medical team and be open about your health history.
The Directorate of Health Promotion and Wellness (DHPW) at the U.S. Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine was established in 1995 with the mission of integrating health promotion into the total Army. A dentist was assigned to the DHPW staff in 1996 to help integrate health promotion into the Army Dental Care System (ADCS). To guide the development of DHPW products, services, and policy for the ADCS, DHPW conducted a survey of dental health promotion and preventive dentistry practices within the ADCS. The survey queried the frequency with which dentists deliver such services and the type and source of their patient educational materials. In this paper, we report the findings of that survey and discuss their implications for improving the delivery of dental health promotion and preventive dentistry services in the ADCS.

Keeping your drive in peak condition; controlling Windows programs; something for sports fans. Tell Dr. Tom Lo, a chiropractor in Crofton, Md., where it hurts, and hell work calmly and methodically to ease the pain. Yet when he learned why his ailing computer had devoured his appointments schedule, he considered using a hammer to put the PC out of its misery. Lo was lucky. Although losing his schedule of forthcoming appointments was inconvenient, it did not irreparably damage his practice. But you may not be as fortunate as he was if you let your business computers hard drives spin on and on without cleaning.

Our lead story in this issue deals with new business formation, a trend that has been affected by the dynamics of a changing economy in the Quadstate region. With a strong economy, fewer people are looking at starting a business because they feel secure in their jobs. And with a soaring real estate market, in which home values have increased by upwards of 100% in the last five years, local entrepreneurs no longer have to max out their credit cards to start a business; they can tap into the equity in their homes. While this may not be the best strategy-betting the proverbial farm on a new business-it certainly provides an alternative source of start-up capital, one that wasnt available several years ago. The changing demographics of the region, caused by an influx of welleducated and skilled commuters from the east in search of a lower cost of living and a better quality of life, has created new business opportunities. Taking advantage of this trend means an entrepreneur must find a market niche to cater to people who are used to spending discretionary income on such things like personal services, wines, day spas and fine dining.

Social, psychological, legal and physical aspects of crime victimization are addressed in the course.

It appears to be a win-win situation for all involved. CompUSA will pick up 100 Computer City stores, allowing it to both expand into new markets or shut down duplicate and competitive locations. And Tandy will finally be free to concentrate on its core competency, RadioShack.Thats not a significant outlay for a move that would, in effect, put the competition out of business during a time when CompUSA is struggling to produce profits in a soft computer market.Although it may seem contradictory that CompUSA should opt to acquire more retail outlets as it works to build its more profitable, non-retail businesses, most analysts considered it a shrewd move.
Buoyed by increasing demand for mobile computing solutions, rugged computer and scanner suppliers have released a new crop of devices for manufacturing and retail applications. Vendors are marketing flexibility, with multiple scanning and wireless communi- cation options, as well as more standardized computing platforms. Over the past few years, theres been more standardization on platforms and product design, said Taylor Smith, senior AIDC analyst at Venture Development Corp. This is largely to provide ease of use and ease of integration to the end user. Intermec Technologies Corp. has broadened its computer line, with hopes of expanding into markets beyond field service and manufacturing. Nevertheless, ICL abandoned plans to use prison labor, at least in the short term. Though a fair number of prisoners had desktop publishing and spreadsheet skills, and one prison even had six Cobol programmers among its population, ICL felt there was a general lack oflegacy language skills that would be of particular use in year 2000 projects. The company has not ruled out the possibility of future collaborations with the prison service, however, if the situation gets more desperate.

During the early months of 2007, the Communications staff worked closely with the Advocacy department, taking advantage of many important visibility opportunities related to LWVUS legislative priorities to promote the League to the public and the media. The staff also worked to keep up the post-election momentum on important election reform issues, as well as other Education Fund activities. In addition, the team helped prepare President Wilson for a trip to Kentucky, where she visited with state officials, lawmakers, League members and the media to promote education for DC Voting Rights. During this time, the Communications team was successful in coordinating numerous television and radio appearances for President Wilson, arranging interviews with major media outlets such as The Washington Post, The Hill, and National Public Radio. In March, LWVUS Executive Director Nancy Tate was profiled by Washington DCs new daily, The Politico. The Communications staff also worked on several special events. In March, the LWVUS celebrated Sunshine Week 2007 with a kick-off event at the National Press Club; created a brand-new page on the LWVUS Web site with resources for Leagues and the public to highlight Womens History Month; and promoted the March 27 Women in the Americas all-day event.

Limousine has diverse meanings, from an inhabitant of the region around Limoges, once called Limousin, and which in the 18th century was looked at askance as home to “an old barbarous French, formerly brought into this country out of France”. The OED overlooks the limousine which was a cloak worn by the driver of a cart whose passenger section was shielded from the elements - hence the vehicle itself and all those gaudy, dark- windowed successors which could house nine cows.

Ad Tracking

August 21st, 2008

Late at night, unable to sleep in the muggy heat, I channel-hop. I alight on BBC World–a documentary about a swish London ad agency working on a Brazilian liquor companys big international splash. Millions are at stake. In such circumstances, when are they not? The pictures gain something of the aura of holy relics. The money thats gone into them, before the hooch launches on the international market, is completely crazy. All spent in the service of image. Theres been some slight consternation at NI Towers around doing an issue on advertising. We advertise ourselves and print ads in the magazine. Might there be just a whiff of the double standard? But theres a gulf between our efforts and those of big-brand mass advertising that stretches from here to, well, almost eternity. We constantly remind our contributors theyve got to help us live up to our advertising promises. We print only a few ads in the NI–those that meet our guidelines and which might have something to offer our readers. And we cherish our independence–weve never had to bin a piece because it might have upset an advertiser. Bins are for junk.
ADVERTISINGThe various delivery mechanisms for advertising include banners at sporting events, billboards, Internet Web sites, logos on clothing, magazines, newspapers, radio spots, and television commercials. Advertising has so permeated everyday life that individuals can expect to be exposed to 1,500 to 3,000 different messages each day. While advertising may seem like the perfect way to get a message out, it does have several limitations, the most commonly noted ones being its inability to focus on an individual consumers specific needs, provide in-depth information about a product, and be cost-effective for small companies.
Web advertisings chief attraction, aside from the bargain-bin price scheme, has traditionally been the quantifiable click-through. If thats not enough for you, a Japanese research firm has developed another tool to determine online marketing effectiveness: an eye-tracker. The idea isnt quite as intrusive as it sounds: the people whose eye movements are tracked are the same focus group volunteers used by marketing directors to test advertisements and Web sites. The difference is that an eye tracker provides more objective feedback rather than traditional subjective feedback from methods like interviews, JCMR says.

DESTINATION. The automotive industry is zooming in South Carolina, its acceleration boosted by government-sponsored initiatives designed to bolster the states economy. The Governor challenged the Department of Commerce to keep the momentum going by creating 25,000 new jobs this year. He outlined several proposals to stimulate new growth, including the creation of a fund using $40 million of lottery proceeds to develop centers of excellence at South Carolina universities and the enactment of legislative incentives for a $100 million venture capital pool for growth and development of new technology companies. One new center of excellence is expected to be an automotive center at Clemson, where the latest automotive technologies and designs can be tested by top engineers and students. He hopes that as a result of this center, South Carolina will become a leader in new automotive engineering jobs.

Seeking greater influence in presidential electoral politics, Florida is gearing up to leapfrog almost all the other states and set a Jan. 29 primary election date, with an option to go even earlier. The bill to adjust the states primary date passed the state House with an overwhelming 115-1 majority and appears likely to pass the Senate as well. Floridas GOP chairman has officially endorsed the idea, defying warnings from national GOP leaders about the loss of Florida delegates at the partys nominating convention.

Editors note: This article is adapted from Menke and Bobbins Integrative Chiropractic, scheduled for release in 2007 by Elsevier Health Sciences. “The medicalization of early diagnosis not only hampers and discourages preventative health care, but it also trains the patient-to-be to function in the meantime as an acolyte to his doctor. He learns to depend on the physician in sickness and in health. He turns into a lifelong patient.” “Medicalizing” is forcing conditions into familiar diagnostic categories for medical management.1 Every complaint has an antidote, whether it needs one or not. ; Treating natural consequences of living as diseases that must be vanquished, leads to too much treatment and too much dependence on the authoritative “professional.” We tend to grant most, if not all of our decision-making authority to an expert in highly complex technologies. In the case of medicine, this often complicates the commonplace condition and prolongs selflimiting ones. Today, diseases and drugs are way oversold.
The national survey of more than 2,000 adults was conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality The survey also showed that Americans rely on the recommendations of friends and family more than standardized quality indicators when selecting a health care provider, and people have little confidence that employers will give reliable information about the quality of health care providers. And despite the undeniable draw of the Internet, people still trust doctors and pharmacists more than advertisements and the Web for information on prescription medications, the survey shows.

Radio continues to be an inexpensive way for dealers and suppliers to reach their increasingly mobile customers Last year, the Minnesota-Dakota Hardware Association used $130,000 in co-op funds provided by five companies — Ace Hardware, United Hardware Distributors, TruServ, Briggs Stratton and 3M — for a five-month-long radio campaign extolling the virtues of the independent dealer over its warehouse competitors. Radio, which traces its roots back to the 1870s when it served as a point-to-point wireless telegraph, has survived several technology revolutions and continues to provide a reliable venue for dealers promotional efforts. Its relatively low cost and access to people while they are mobile are making radio a preferred and efficient medium for more companies. At least one study has even found that online dealers, with their cutting-edge approach to marketing and selling, are using radio ambitiously to get their messages out to shoppers.

“There are [more than] 30 million Americans who have no health insurance and another 20 million who have inadequate health insurance,” says Rep. Louis Stokes (D0Ohio), chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Brain Trust. “It is mandatory that we begin to try and give Americans–particularly minorities–adequate health care as a right.” The Bush plan would give people not covered by Medicaid tax credits, and families making less than $80,000 a year tax deductions to pay for medical costs. He would also pass laws to ensure that even chronically ill patients could receive health insurance. The plan has received a cool reception on Capitol Hill, and alternate proposals, including a full-scale, government-paid national health insurance plan, are under development. But what does America really want for its health care system? The views are many.

Buying a home is often the largest purchase decision a person will make. It is therefore not surprising that the use of home inspectors is increasing as buyers seek to confirm the physical condition of their purchases. Home inspectors, however, have often been referred to as “deal killers” by real estate licensees because they have, on occasion, been responsible for stopping a sale of residential real estate that would have otherwise been completed. More recently, however, licensees are viewing home inspections somewhat differently. Instead of perceiving home inspectors as a potential source of reducing a real estate licensees income, licensees are viewing them as a way to increase future sales and reduce potential liability on the buyer side of the transaction. This study examines the role that home inspections play in the residential real estate home buying process. To date, no study has considered this impact on the sales process. Furthermore, the performance, process and other characteristics of those sales agents that have been involved with a home inspection in the residential sales process are unknown.

Mens Leather Jackets

The enduring love affair with the aviators best friend As the war clouds of WW I loomed on the horizon, aviators did not have special flight clothing and typically flew with whatever uniform was prescribed as the uniform of the day. Throughout the worlds air forces, this widespread practice dates back to the origins of flight when Orville and Wilbur Wright flew their Flyer in their suits; WW I aviators flew in their service dress jackets with “choker”-style collars. It was no wonder that silk scarves were introduced to protect necks from chafing. The common day suit of the time sufficed for the early flights of limited duration, speed and altitude. As speeds increased and aircraft pushed ever higher for longer flights, aviating became progressively more inhospitable owing to wind blast and the cold temperatures at altitude. Aviators turned to the only available sources of robust protective clothing: sports equipment suppliers and “outfitters,” whose tailors had produced specialized clothing for years for use by expeditions venturing into the Arctic cold and the high altitudes of unconquered summits. One of these firms, Willis and Geiger, is credited with developing the G-1 design for the Navy. It is still in existence. Auto racing, which had a slight lead on aviation, and the fledgling game of football, had encouraged sports suppliers into the development of protective helmets that aviators adapted for their use. Aviators still had to improvise until aviation became widely accepted. At that time, leather-the universal choice for protective clothing for auto and motorcycle racing-was ideal for aviation use, as it provided a barner against the cold air and provided an outer shell so the inner garments could retain body heat.
New processes offer softer, more luxurious materials as inviting as a fine jacket. Leather is as good as gold for automakers. It literally reeks of luxury, and has never been in greater demand than today. Trimming a car with leather seats costs around $200, suppliers say, but the option adds $1,000 to the sticker price. “The vinyl suppliers have done a fine job replicating the grain and appearance of leather,” says Jaguar design chief Geoff Lawson. “I even have a hard time telling the difference myself.”

Abstract The apparent altruism observed among contributors to Free/Libre/Open Source Software (FLOSS) initiatives is often envied by managers seeking to inspire and motivate employees. While conventional managerialist authors often encourage the emulation of FLOSS management style, this paper seeks a social-psychological understanding on FLOSS contributors motivation, and the control dynamics of the projects organization. Radical changes on some of the basic assumptions of conventional practices may be required to translate FLOSS approaches to corporate management. The philosophy of the Free/Libre/Open Source Software (FLOSS) movement, and more specifically, the Linux development model, are heralded as powerful and effective approaches for organizing software development. Lately, aspects of the FLOSS approach have been abstracted and proposed as a new paradigm for managing organizations. This is especially true of so-called virtual organizations, a term loosely used to describe those entities whose members are geographically dispersed, where communication is primarily (or exclusively) accomplished through Internet-enabled technology, and which are largely concerned with the production of knowledge-related goods and services as a key business initiative. As the “fast capitalist” discourse (Gee, Hull, Lankshear, 1996) suggests, successful companies in the globalized economy are increasingly taking on these characteristics. It is therefore likely that many aspects of the FLOSS management approach will be appropriated as “best practices” by managerialist organization development proponents, and nominally applied to contemporary business management.

Red Jacket Red Jacket (1758-1830) was a Seneca Tribal Commander who lent support to the British during the Revolutionary War. He also fought to prevent conversions to Christianity among the Iroquios. Although Red Jacket eventually allied himself with other Indian nations in support of the British during the American Revolution, he was originally hesitant about the affiliation. This ambivalence perhaps explains why he did little fighting during the conflict. According to a number of accounts, Red Jackets reluctance to fight was perceived as cowardice by some Iroquois war leaders such as Corn-planter and Joseph Brant.

The joys of flying on your birthday have been much discussed in this column: cakes, champagne and even upgrades can be laid on for the celebrant. But Kate Thorman of Oxford found that becoming 12 provided her with a Catch-22 problem. “So, on the one hand Kate is old enough to pay the adult fare, but on the other hand she is too young to travel without a paid escort,” says her exasperated father. At this point, Mr Thorman gave up and booked with another airline; then poor Kate found her birthday flight delayed by four hours at Birmingham airport. “Come back, Gorbachev, all is forgiven,” pleads Philip Robinson of Sheffield. “The last time I visited my friend in Minsk, this city was in the USSR. Sports Chiropractic EDITORS: ROBERT D. MOOTZ, DC, AND KEVIN MCCARTHY, DC PUBLISHER: ASPENPart One of this book is devoted to conditioning and exercise injury prevention with articles on the health benefits of exercise, aerobic conditioning related to injury prevention and rehabilitation, weight training, and chiropractic spinal care of the athlete. The articles are well-written and supplemented appropriately with illustrations and photographs. This section has extensive appendices covering topics from readiness questionnaires to examinations to consent forms and recommendations for preventing injuries to major components of the musculoskeletal system. They will provide the practicing doctor of chiropractic with some ready-made forms to use in a sports chiropractic practice. The second part of this compilation addresses injury care. There are sections on assuring quality of care, diagnosis and management of common injuries to the knee, lower leg, and foot, and sections on spinal stabilization and myofascial pain syndromes. In addition to excellent photographs demonstrating most of the procedures, these sections-like others in the book-have accompanying algorithms. TICC is well known for its extensive use of quality algorithms. These most definitely enhance and facilitate the learning experience. For those not familiar with these wonderful tools, they provide a step-by-step approach to making clinical decisions and deciding which procedure should follow. They take the clinician through some complex processes in a logical, easy-to-follow manner.
Proposed Legislation Would Expand the Chiropractic Benefit Worldwide Dynamic Chiropractic examines House Resolutions 5122 and 5202, two important pieces of legislation that would significantly impact the provision of chiropractic services to U.S. military personnel and veterans around the world. Providing chiropractic benefits to the nations veterans has been a goal of the chiropractic profession for decades. B.J. Palmer first promulgated the idea of making chiropractic a health benefit for veterans as early as 1937, and even succeeded in having a bill introduced in Congress that would have given veterans access to chiropractic services. While Dr. Palmers original efforts were unsuccessful, the profession finally reached its goal in January 2002, when President George W. Bush signed into law the Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Programs Enhancement Act, which established a permanent chiropractic benefit within the Veterans Affairs health care system.
In 1935, the Committee on Educational Standards was formed, the result of a joint effort by the National Chiropractic Association and the Council on State Examining Boards. Shortly after this committee was formed, it began to evaluate chiropractic schools, with the intent that all chiropractic education essentially become equal by meeting specific educational standards. The Committee on Educational Standards later became the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE), and the fight continued - between those who wanted improved educational standards and those who did not. The straight schools fought the introduction of the 4,000-hour curriculum, just as they fought the introduction of the first professional degree and its requirement for two years of undergraduate education as a prerequisite to the chiropractic degree program.Through the years, the majority prevailed and eventually, in 1974, the CCE became recognized by the U.S. Office of Education (now the U.S. Department of Education) as the accrediting agency for the chiropractic profession.

Monday May 5, 2003 will go down in history as a day to remember in employment law. It was the day the long-debated amendments to the Health Safety in Employment Act finally came into effect. Why is this new legislation so important? The term “workplace stress” took on a whole new significance, with new obligations for employers, and potentially serious financial consequences for those who ignore them. Workplace stress is no longer simply a sad fact of life. It is now an officially recognised and legislated “workplace hazard”, with the amendments extending the definitions of “harm” and “hazard” to include physical and mental harm caused by work-related stress. A cursory reading of the new legislation might be enough to instantly treble employers workplace stress, but a deeper understanding goes some way to restoring mental equilibrium. The Occupational Safety and Health booklet, Healthy work, Managing Stress in the Workplace, tells employers that “there is only a requirement to manage work stressors or the individuals stressed situation where you can be reasonably expected to know about the stress. Even then the obligation is only to do what is reasonably practicable in the circumstances.”

OGDEN — PW MacKenzie Exhibit, a company with more than 20 years experience in the trade show exhibition industry, said Friday it will open a U.S. headquarters at 113 N. 700 West. PW MacKenzie Exhibit is a family-owned business that designs, builds and manages exhibits at more than 30 trade shows a year. Its client list includes Marmot, Icebreaker, G3, ExOfficio, Marker USA, Volkl and Arcteryx.
Hotels around the country are spending millions of dollars participating in trade shows at conventions all over the world. The objective is to bring more business to the properties. Exhibiting at these happenings is a good idea, and an important part of a marketing plan, but are we maximizing our potential when we go to them? The way to be more productive in this type of promotion is to start with a plan. One should start with the idea of researching the event to determine to what extent the attendees would be or could be business prospects for the property. Then gather information relative to previous events attendance. Here you are looking at numbers of buyers only, not combined figures for buyers, suppliers, speakers, guests, media and others. You should also check out the ratio of buyers to exhibitors to make sure there will be enough floor action to justify the trip. Once the research is done, and you have decided to participate, plan on the number of your hotel staff who should attend. This has a lot to do with the length of the show. You probably do not want anyone working a booth longer than three hours at a shot without a break (some of these shows go on all day).

The Tennessee sugar chest was first introduced to readers of The Magazine ANTIQUES nearly seventy years ago in the first serious article on the subject ever to appear outside the South. (1) So it seems appropriate that new discoveries of this peculiarly southern furniture form should be discussed in the pages of this magazine. Within the small group of antebellum furniture forms most common in the South, the sugar chest in its many variations remains the most coveted by Tenessee collectors. Indeed the possessions of the family sugar chest has been known to divide heirs into enemy camps. Long after the price of sugar had fallen, the sugar chest remained a revered object. To understand the strange aura that surrounds the sugar chest it is necessary to understand a bit of its history and lore. Sugar has been prized throughout the ages, and as with most valued commodities, its storage has been tied to the lock and key. That said, no one took sugar more to heart than did the early settlers in the backcountry of the American South. It was one commodity that few seemed willing to live without. The earliest records of life in Tennessee repeatedly mention the importation of cane sugar in loaf form from New Orleans as well as local attempts to manufacture brown or maple sugar and sugar substitutes like sorghum.
In this report, it clearly identify the principal external factors driving or curtailing growth in the outdoor and casual furniture market. As a purchase related to the home, broader economic factors such as economic prosperity, home ownership and home sales are underlying drivers for casual furniture. Discretionary income, shifting demographics, trends in home improvement and the influx of cheaper imported furniture have all shaped the casual and outdoor furniture market. Exclusive consumer research reveals the attitudes, needs and behaviour of outdoor and casual furniture consumers, with analysis broken down by demographic characteristics. Six years of specific sales data provides a factual and impartial presentation of the market as a whole. We also evaluate the performance of individual sectors in the market, both by material (metal, plastic, wicker, wood) and product type (seating, tables, umbrellas and other products). It also provides details of major companies and brands in the casual and outdoor furniture market.

Thirtymile Fire Accident Review Board* Editors note: On July 10, 2001, four firefighters died in a burnover on the Thirtymile Fire on the Okanogan National Forest near Winthrop, WA. The USDA Forest Service formed a team to investigate the accident and a board to review the teams findings and formulate an action plan for preventing similar future accidents. The action plan, released on October 22 and updated on December 3, 2001, is reprinted here, with condensed preface and lightly edited action items. For timelines and progress updates, see the Fire and Aviation Management Website at . The Thirtymile Fire Prevention Action Plan was developed from the recommendations made by the Thirtymile Fire Accident Review Board (see page 13). The plan seeks to prevent future accidents of the type that occurred on the Thirtymile Fire. Although all firefighters involved in the Thirtymile Fire were Forest Service employees, the corrective actions in this plan will affect wildland fire management and policy in all jurisdictions and should be addressed by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG). The Accident Investigation Team and the Accident Review Board were both made up of interagency representatives.
NFPA launches a new fire prevention initiative. These challenges include staffing smoke alarm installation programs, working in high-crime areas, and leveraging relationships with citywide institutions serving pre-school and elementary school children and adults of all ages. Many communities must also provide culturally sensitive educational media to newcomers in their own languages and get community members to focus on fire safety when other issues may seem more pressing.
OAKLAND — In response to a fire last week that engulfed Sun Hop Fat Supermarket in the Eastlake district near Chinatown, local merchants will host a community meeting today to discuss fire prevention. Representatives from the city of Oakland, the Oakland Police Department and Oakland Fire Department have been invited to share methods and techniques for preventing fires in commercial spaces. Organizers say the meeting will serve as a forum to share information on reporting arson-related incidents and facilitating communication between the Eastlake neighborhood and local agencies.

A house in Hampstead that has hidden its north London origins behind a new Japanese personality, has just come on the market. Two adjoining houses in Fitzjohns Avenue were replanned and redesigned with specially selected materials. A stream runs along the full length of the properties (which are reached by means of a slatted bridge) and a sunken Japanese garden is filled with pebbles, ferns and bamboo. One of the houses only is for sale at an asking price of pounds 435,000 through Goldschmidt Howland (0171-435 4404). The main bedroom has a low-level custom-made Japanese platform bed and sliding shoji cupboards made from yellow rice paper. Housebuilders have just had their busiest month for two years and the prospects look good, according to the latest report for the House Builders Federation. New homes have increased their market share to almost 13 per cent from the 10 per cent at which they had been stuck since 1988. John Stewart, an independent housing economist and author of the report, says they are managing to fill a gap in the market because of sensitive prices and attractive marketing. “When I did some research with the Halifax we found a lack of confidence among intending homebuyers: they were not sure they would be able to sell their present homes. In buying a new home the hassle-free factor is very important,” he said. This bears out evidence from builders such as Barratt of a new breed of buyer at the top end of the market who, frustrated by the lack of good property available, is turning to developers for the first time. The success of Barratts award-winning development, Lakeside Grange, in Weybridge, Surrey, looks like being matched by its latest enterprise on the River Thames at Chiswick. At the recent opening of Royal Thames Crescent, all but three of the 19 five-bedroom houses and 13 two-bedroom apartments, with prices ranging up to pounds 600,000, have been sold.

Printing is a competitive business and an expensive operation. When government subdivisions are competing against the private sector for the same business, it makes it even more competitive, said Jim Grammer, owner of Gowdy Printcraft Press. The main printing production headquarters of the U.S. Government Printing Office is the largest information processing, printing and distribution facility in the world. Many of our nations most important information products, such as the Congressional Record and the Federal Register, are produced at the GPOs main plant, a 1.5 million square-foot complex in Washington, D.C., said Bruce James, the chief executive officer of the GPO. The GPO is the federal governments primary centralized resource for gathering, cataloging, producing, providing and preserving published information in all its forms. However, James said the majority of the governments printing needs are met through a long-standing partnership with Americas printing industry, dating back to the beginning of World War II.
For the past several years printing technology has been radically changing the printing industry, and while many printing companies are reluctant to invest in new, state-of-the-art equipment and software out of concern for their return on investment, Print Tech believes it is essential. Print Tech has always considered itself a leader in the quick printing area, and to grow within that arena the company understands that it must evolve within the industry. With that understanding, Print Tech is now offering its customers PrintFLEX(TM), a Web-to-print document customization technology. Print Tech has been working on this technology for the past two years and invested millions to bring its clients to the cutting edge of customized business and marketing communications. “Print Tech has developed PrintFLEX(TM), a technology that will set the benchmark for all print marketing customization, or as we like to say variable data printing on steroids,” says Russell Evans, CEO. “With traditional print, direct marketing returns of .5% to 2% are the norm. PrintFLEX(TM) customization, however, has proven results 10 times the norm and has seen response rates of over 20%. Its about helping our customers market and communicate more successfully to their current and potential clients.”

Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.

REFINANCED GRANDFATHERED DEBT QUADS AS grandfathered debt if the mortgage proceeds do not exceed the balance of the old mortgage prior to refinancing. Home mortgage interest expense is deductible if certain requirements are met. In general, mortgage interest expense is deductible only if the home is collateral for the debt (secured debt). If the borrower cannot pay the debt, the lender can use the home to satisfy the loan. Interest expense paid on home acquisition debt, home equity debt, and grandfather debt is generally considered deductible. A mortgage taken out after October 13, 1987, to acquire, build, or substantially improve a qualified residence is classified as home acquisition debt. Qualifying debt is limited to $1 million ($500,000 each for married filing separately). The $1 million limitation is reduced (but not below zero) by any grandfathered debt. If home acquisition debt is refinanced, the new debt will qualify as home acquisition debt only up to the balance of the old mortgage prior to refinancing. The interest attributable to the additional debt will be nondeductible personal interest unless it qualifies as home equity debt.
Housing experts are predicting that any increase in mortgage rates in 1997 will be more than matched by a rise in property prices. TSB says mortgage rates will have hit 8.25 per cent by the end of the year, pushing homebuying costs up to pounds 30.70 of every pounds 100 of take-home pay - pounds 5.10 more than we pay now. Mortgage broker John Charcol is even more pessimistic and expects mortgage rates to hit 8.75 per cent. But the costs, says leading housing analyst Rob Thomas of City firm UBS, should be more than met by soaring house prices.
