Protecting yourself from both types of UV rays can help reduce your risk of developing skin cancer from sun exposure.
Solar radiation spans a whole range of electromagnetic spectrum including UV radiation, which are potentially harmful to normal cells as well as ionizing radiations which are therapeutically beneficial towards the killing of cancer cells. UV radiation is an established cause of a majority of skin cancers as well as precancerous conditions such as actinic keratosis. However, despite efforts to educate people about the use of sunscreens and protective clothing as preventive strategies, the incidence of skin cancer and other skin-related disorders are on the rise. This has generated an enormous interest towards finding alternative approaches for management of UV-mediated damages. Chemoprevention via nontoxic agents, especially botanical antioxidants, is one such approach that is being considered as a plausible strategy for prevention of photodamages including photocarcinogenesis. In this review, we have discussed the photoprotective effects of resveratrol, an antioxidant found in grapes and red wine, against UVB exposure-mediated damages in vitro and in vivo. In addition, we have also discussed studies showing that resveratrol can act as a sensitizer to enhance the therapeutic effects of ionizing radiation against cancer cells. Based on available literature, we suggest that resveratrol may be useful for (1) prevention of UVB-mediated damages including skin cancer and (2) enhancing the response of radiation therapies against hyperproliferative, precancerous and neoplastic conditions. Solar radiation occurs as a result of nuclear fusion reaction occurring on the sun. Sun light actually contains a broad spectrum of radiation known as the electromagnetic spectrum that includes radio waves, infrared waves, visible light, UV rays, X-rays and gamma-rays (Fig. 1). About half of the solar radiation is in the visible short-wave part of the electromagnetic spectrum, whereas the other half is mostly in the near-infrared part, with some in the UV range of the spectrum (Fig. 1). Solar spectrum also includes X-rays and gamma radiation. The energetic photons from solar radiation (UV, X-rays and gamma-rays) are ionizing, meaning they use atomic interactions to break chemical bonds. This ionizing radiation is known to be hazardous to nearly all tissues or organs of human or animals depending upon the radiation dose and exposure schedule. Due to its prevalence, UV radiation from sun is regarded as the most important and potentially hazardous radiation and environmental toxicant. More than 90% of the total solar radiation that reaches the Earth is UVA radiation (320-400 nm), and the relationship between skin cancer and UVA exposure has been clearly established during recent years (1). UVB radiation (290-320 nm) is the main causative factor for non-melanoma skin cancers (reviewed in 2), with over one million new cases of basal and squamous cell skin cancers diagnosed annually in the United States (3). Further, UV radiation is believed to be a causative factor for several skin cancers and precancerous conditions including actinic keratosis (4). UV radiation also elicits a variety of other adverse effects called the UV response including erythema, hyperplasia, hyperpigmentation, sunburn cells, inflammation, immunosuppression and premature skin aging (5). It is also important to mention here that among all the cancers, skin cancer is believed to be one of the most preventable and/or curable cancer types.

Enamel, the outer layer of teeth, which is highly calcified and harder than bone, cannot be regenerated by the body. Tooth decay, which damages to the enamel, is caused by various oral bacteria. One type of bacteria that resides in the mouth breaks down residual food particles that remain on teeth after eating. A byproduct of this bacterias metabolism is plaque. Other bacteria attach themselves to this plaque and begin secreting an acid which causes small holes to form in the tooth enamel. This allows still other types of bacteria to enter these holes and crevices and erode the softer tissue below. The process weakens the tooth by creating a cavity. The breakdown of the soft tissue is responsible for the pain that is typically associated with cavities. Beyond the initial holes, the outer enamel is left primarily intact. Untreated, cavities can result in diseases such as dental caries and abscesses.

The home, owned by Dr. David Garner, was approximately fifty years old and highly compartmentalized, according to Bonnie Wolke. Additionally, an attached garage had no direct access to the house; Garner had to leave the garage and enter the home through his front door. Therefore, the owner requested a new three-car garage be added on the other end of the home to give him direct access. After that first project, Garners vision for his home mushroomed into a total transformation of most of the living space, according to the Wolkes. Denny Wolke explained that the owner was very involved in the design and selection of products for the finished project. The changes were intended to open the house up and provide a sense of flowing space while still working within the limitations of space available. The Wolkes and Garner began with the kitchen, which was very small with dated appliances. Wesson removed one exterior wall and added 50 square feet to the floor plan. Columbia University Medical Center has
launched the first clinical trial of a possible herbal preventative for
prostate cancer. The Phase I study will determine whether Zyflamend#174;, an
herbal supplement commonly used as an anti-inflammatory, can prevent
prostate cancer in patients with prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN).

“Zyflamend has shown an ability, in vitro, to reduce prostate cancer cell
proliferation by as much as 78 percent and to induce cancer cell death or
apoptosis,” says Aaron E. Katz, M.D., associate professor of urology at
Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Director of the
Center of Holistic Urology at Columbia University Medical Center and
principal investigator of the study. “These results are exceptionally
promising and have led us to initiate this clinical trial.”

The herbal supplement, made by New Chapter, Inc., is composed of 10 herbs
which inhibit the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inflammation pathway. Long-term
chronic inflammation contributes to carcinogenesis in many organ systems
(the origin of certain cancers); inhibiting this pathway appears to be key
to preventing cancers like prostate and colon cancer. An herbal supplement
such as this herbal supplement may inhibit this pathway without causing the
adverse gastrointestinal side effects associated with the long-term use of

The story of golf is as much a tale about change as it is tales about great players miraculous shots and dramatic victories. Great players have been the constant in a game that has changed dramatically over the last 700 years. From wooden balls (prior to 1440) to feather-stuffed leather-covered balls known as “featheries” (1440 to 1848) to gutta percha balls made from the sap of trees indigenous to Malaysia (1848 to 1901) to rubber balls made from winding rubber thread around a solid rubber core (1901 to the present) to the solid core balls commonly used today the game has relentlessly evolved. And of course as balls changed so did clubs. The first clubs had shafts made of wood probably ash. Wood clubs had long broad heads while the irons tended to have large faces square toes and nicked sockets. Sometime during the feather ball period perhaps in the late 1770s club-making became profitable enough that artisans began taking up the craft. By the 1800s most shafts were made from ash or hickory while all sorts of woods–beech pear apple–were used to fashion the heads of wooden clubs. Depending on the course the number of holes also varied usually ranging from five to 18. The shape and size of club heads also regularly were changed in the early years of the game either to improve accuracy or increase distance or both. As time passed the number of clubs also increased: from two or three in the 1600s to four or five in the 1700s to five or six in the 1800s to eight or nine or even ten by the late 1900s. Today a normal set of clubs numbers 14 and can be made of materials with space age sounding names like graphic tungsten and titanium. Every year hundreds of companies produce thousands of variations of golf clubs in what appears to be a never-ending technological war all with the purpose of helping a golfer hit a little white ball toward a very small hole an awful long distance away.

New law requires PIs to be licensed When F.M. Chris Rey moved back to St. Louis after a career elsewhere in the military and federal government, he set out to get licensed as a private investigator — and was astounded to learn that licenses were not required in his home state. He quickly got involved with the Missouri Association of Private Investigators and has worked for years to get a state law passed requiring licensure. This year, the bill finally succeeded. The law is already on the books, but licensing is not expected to begin until early 2009.
A private investigator is suing attorney H. Blanton Brown over files he says Brown refuses to relinquish involving a lawsuit against Skirvin Plaza Hotel owner Oesman Sapta. Myles won a $1.9 million lawsuit against Sapta in connection with a failed business deal involving OSO Motors Inc., formerly owned by Sapta. Plaintiffs allege they conducted extensive investigation for Brown to assist him in representing Myles. They also say that Brown made assurances to them that they would be paid “well in excess of their normal hourly rate” for the work. Berglan and Taylor contend they devoted nine investigators and hundreds of man hours to help Brown but have not received payment for the work. They also allege that they turned over their files on the case to Brown as part of a settlement Myles was to reach with Sapta that never materialized. Part of the failed settlement required all records in the case to be destroyed. Though the records are still intact, plaintiffs say that Brown wont give them up. “I dont know why hes keeping my files,” Taylor said. A similar plea was made by Myles new attorney, Russell Wright, who claims that Brown is unlawfully holding Myles file and preventing Wright, a former associate of Brown, from adequately representing Myles. Myles terminated Brown as his attorney in April. He has been unable to collect any of his $1.9 million judgment from Sapta. Brown argues that he is entitled to keep Myles file as a lien on his portion of the judgment Myles received. As bad as that news is, last year at this time NCSL found 36 states with budget gaps. On the other hand, NCLB and IDEA could be funded retroactively, which would help make up for last years budget shortfalls that resulted from unfunded or underfunded mandates. If you are a school leader in one of the rare districts whose state legislature decided this summer to support quality education with adequate funding for all your schools, the future must look bright, so you can skip the remainder of this column. David is a member of the Association of British Investigators and a member of the Certificated Bailiffs Association and has ensured a reputation for operating within a strict code of practice offering a reputation for total professionalism. This was the first year-on-year quarterly fall of road freight transport since Q2 of 2003. Q3 of 2006 also witnessed a 10.2% fall in the volume of maritime freight transport. This activity registered the second consecutive year-on-year quarterly decrease, whereas in 2005 it still enjoyed robust growth (41.7%), driven by the boom in the industry. Harbour freight transport surged by 27.6% in Q3 and also recorded a high nine-month year-on-year increase (24.6%). Over the last five years, road freight transport surged by more than 50%, which was almost entirely due to the increase in international transport. In Q3 of 2006 over Q3 of 2001, road freight transport picked up by 56.5% or 1,003 million tonne kilometres (tkm). The shipment of goods out of or into Slovenia rose by 49.1% or 534 million tkm, whereas transport abroad and cabotage (the shipment of goods within another country) shot up 4.3-fold, i.e. by 450 million tkm. Meanwhile, national road freight transport increased by a modest 3.5%, or 19 million tkm. Within the EU, Slovenia is one of the few countries that perform the highest number of per capita road shipments (measured in tkm). The favourable transit position and the countrys smallness (a high share of international trade) underpin Slovenias high proportion of international transport, whose growth has been additionally boosted by the process of Slovenias integration in the EU. The last administrative barriers to carrying out freight transport abroad were removed as Slovenia became a full EU member, which led to the boom in activity seen in recent years.
Looking at freight transport, there was a significant increase in maritime and railway transport, while the volume of road transport remained roughly at the level from last years second quarter. After the volume of maritime transport fell by a fifth in the first quarter, it rose by 14.5% in the second quarter of 2007, year on year. The volume of transport has become more volatile in recent years, but the volume of goods carried has not contracted significantly relative to the global conjuncture witnessed in the industry in 2005. Maritime transport is one of the minor transport modes in Slovenia. Railway freight transport grew by 14.9% in the first quarter and continued to grow strongly in the second quarter. Harbour transport recorded a modest increase, while road freight transport did not increase in year-on-year terms in the second quarter, partly because of the very high volume of road transport seen in the second quarter of 2006. Data also show that the expansion in this mode of transport, boosted by the abolition of restrictions upon Slovenias accession to the EU, has moderated somewhat this year Slovenia is near the top among EU countries according to the volume of road freight transport per capita. The assessment refers to the volume of freight transport expressed in tonne kilometres, undertaken by freight vehicles registered in a given country. It measures carriage by domestic freight vehicles in the country of registration and abroad, and not the volume of transport within the territory of a given country. In 2006 by far the most per capita road shipments were performed by carriers registered in Luxembourg (18,766 tkm; see graph). Slovenian carriers (with three times lower freight transport per capita) were ranked second and performed 58.9% more transport than the average carrier in the EU. The high intensity of road freight transport in Slovenia is the result of the surging growth rates of road transport, particularly in 2004 and 2005 (27.9% and 22.5%). From the second quarter of 2004 to the second quarter of 2007, the volume of shipments carried by freight vehicles registered in Slovenia increased by 53.8%. Domestic transport rose by 23.9%, while international transport climbed by as much as 63.8%. Within international transport, the largest (3.2-fold) increase was recorded in cross-trade transport and cabotage (transport performed in another country). The well-developed shipping industry in Slovenia is attributable to Slovenias favourable position at the crossing of European corridors V and X. Transport on these corridors is increasing, and Slovenian carriers are exploiting new business opportunities. With Slovenias entry into the EU, a number of administrative barriers for carriage within the EU were removed for Slovenian carriers (especially the procurement of a limited number of licences). Slovenia also negotiated the possibility to perform cabotage in the EU-15 countries, which the Eastern European countries that joined the EU together with Slovenia will only be allowed to do after the end of a five-year period.

NORWALK, Conn. — Theres an old tradition in standard medical circles of dismissing so-called alternative medicine as everything from witchcraft to nonsense. The move, the first by a major U.S. health-care company, suggests that the industry is giving some credence to consumer claims that certain kinds of alternative medicine work. In fact, many insurers already cover some types of alternative medicine, such as therapy by chiropractors — although few cover less conventional treatments like herbology, in which herbs are used to treat diseases. “Its really driven by consumer demand,” said Hassan Rifaat, manager of Oxfords alternative-medicine division. Analysts and industry executives say the market for alternative medicine amounts to billions, though the exact amount is up in the air. Norwalk, Conn.-based Oxford pegs the market at about $50 billion; others estimate a more conservative $18 billion to $20 billion. Today, most of that money is paid out of pocket by consumers. Yet, the size of the alternative-medicine market doesnt necessarily translate into a boost for the bottom line of health- care companies or insurers. For example, employers that subscribe to Oxford plans can sign up to provide coverage for alternative treatments by paying a 3 percent increase in premiums, the company said. Even if all Oxford customers added that coverage, it would represent only a small portion of the $1.73 billion in premiums that the company collected in 1995. “Its not an area with any real commercial significance,” said Paine Webber Inc. analyst David Lothson. That could change — or thats what alternative-care providers hope. HMOs now cover 60 million Americans, while another 80 million are covered through other forms of managed care and traditional medical insurance. “As more services are covered, the more alternative treatments people will try,” said Neal Heller, chairman and chief executive of Natural Health Trends Corp., which runs schools that train massage therapists and operates clinics that offer alternative-health treatments. Plenty of people are already convinced that alternative treatments work. The American Chiropractic Association reports that about 20 million people visit chiropractors each year, though only half of the nations HMOs cover those services. Oxford said its recent decision was based on member demand after a tremendous response to an article on the subject in its member magazine. The company, which provides coverage to about 1.4 million people in the eastern United States through its HMOs and other plans, isnt just limiting coverage to treatments now widely seen as effective, such as visits to chiropractors. Included in its new network of 1,000 alternative-medicine specialists are acupuncturists, naturopathic doctors, massage therapists, yoga instructors, clinical nutritionists and registered dietitians, along with a division to sell herbs and holistic devices. It said it also plans to add other services, like the Chinese martial art taichi. Some other health care companies, such as American Western Life Insurance Co. and Kaiser Permanente Health Plans, offer a limited range of alternative-medical services, but none have developed a full network and benefits plan comparable to Oxfords. “Mainstream HMOs and insurers are skeptical,” said Natural Healths Heller. Indeed, more Americans have taken a greater interest in their own health and preventive care, particularly as HMOs strive to cut costs by placing limits on certain types of treatments. “They feel as though modern medicine has failed them,” Heller said. While coverage of alternative treatments is on the rise, it will take several years before theres wide acceptance among benefit plans and insurers, analysts and executives said. When that happens, Heller said, his clinics will be ready.
LIKE ALL health reporters, I get a lot of books sent to me - the vast majority promoting some new (or not so new) alternative therapy. You know the sort of thing. Why Zebras Dont Get Ulcers (a guide to stress), The Nine Myths of Ageing, and Yoga for Pregnancy are three of the latest. Most go straight on the pile under my desk, unopened, awaiting the recycling bin. I looked this quotation up and found that it comes from a piece by Dr Phil Hammond, the former Independent columnist, in which he lists a number of the claimed benefits for urine therapy concluding with “. . . and in Germany they have sold 100,000 copies of the urophiles bible, The Golden Fountain”. Thus is a dull fact turned into a citation. The claims made for the curative powers of urine are indeed impressive. A woman reported that her chilblains were cured by soaking her feet in her own urine. A builder described the practice of construction workers who peed on their hands at the end of the day to ease roughness and callouses. An HIV-positive man described how urine therapy had healed lesions inside his mouth and on his skin.
Sir: The risks of unregulated and irresponsible alternative medicine are rightly highlighted in your report of the article in the New England Journal of Medicine (”Alternative medicine a health risk, say experts”, 17 September). The public may be unaware that in many areas the evidence base for orthodox medicine is non-existent, and the potential for harm substantial. The evidence base for medical homeopathy is far from complete. However, one example of the many supportive studies is as follows. Of a group of 506 outpatients at the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital with a range of conditions including back pain, arthritis and allergies, 81 per cent improved with regard to their main problem and 80 per cent in their overall well-being. Of the 300 who were on conventional drugs at the outset, two- thirds reduced or stopped them.
